The Memorial – a steel beam from the 107th floor of the World Trade Center’s North Tower in New York City – commemorates the support America’s NATO Allies and partners offered after the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001. The very next day, on September 12, NATO – for the first time in its history – invoked Article 5, the collective defense clause of the Washington Treaty, signaling the attacks on the United States represented an attack on all NATO members.
