Today, President Donald J. Trump dedicated the 9/11 and Article 5 Memorial at #NATO headquarters in Brussels, #Belgium. The Memorial – a steel beam from the 107th floor of the World Trade Center’s North Tower in New York City – commemorates the support America’s NATO Allies and partners offered after the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001. The very next day, on September 12, NATO – for the first time in its history – invoked Article 5, the collective defense clause of the Washington Treaty, signaling the attacks on the United States represented an attack on all NATO members. The Memorial stands as a solemn reminder of the bonds linking the United States and its NATO Allies.

Secretary Kerry: “Our thoughts are with all those in Brussels, including the injured and the loved ones of those who were killed, and with the first responders and security personnel who are working tirelessly to keep Brussels safe.” The Secretary also reiterated the United States’ firm support for our Belgian ally – as well as all of Europe - in the face of this tragedy.”

The United States government is closely monitoring the situation in Brussels and remains in contact with our counterparts in the region. The U.S. Embassy in Brussels continues to make every effort to account for the welfare of American citizens in the city and stands ready to provide whatever support the Belgian Government may require in the days ahead.
