A Tribute to Marine Security Guards

Perhaps one of the most significant events shared by both the U.S. Department of State and the U.S. Marine Corps occurred on September 6, 2014, when the Marine Security Guard (MSG) Detachment at Embassy Beirut conducted its activation of Post #1 and began manning it around-the-clock. This was indeed a notable milestone, as it marked the first time that Marines had returned to Beirut as full-time embassy guards in more than 30 years. This holds a profound significance for Marines young and old who recall that the embassy was bombed on April 18, 1983, just six months prior to the attack on the Marines’ Battalion Landing Team barracks at the Beirut airport that killed 220 Marines, 18 sailors, and three soldiers. The re-establishment of the MSG Detachment in Beirut is a re-energizing and reaffirmation of the United States’ commitment to its diplomatic security mission and upholds its strong belief in American diplomacy.
